Course Description
This course deals with a survey the different cultures that flourished in Europe from Cro-Magnon (Upper Palaeolithic) up to the development of the Celtic tribes. We will start with a discussion on the evolution of the concept of archaeology and the aims and nature of it. Then, we will go on with the core of our topic thanks to a chronological development.
Objectives
1. Students will improve their knowledges about the different periods dealing with Ancient Times and according to two ways :
From a chronological viewpoint : Students will be able to list the important human evolutions from Prehistoric times (40 000 BP) up to the Roman civilisation (500 AD) from a practical viewpoint as a theoretic one.
From a thematic viewpoint : the scopes covered by the course are- archaeology (lifestyle, economy, activities, behaviors, palaeoanthropology) - art history (art styles) - history (important characters, events) - auxiliary disciplines (exact sciences as humanities)
2. Students will improve their competency about the archaeological research methods and aims from chronological and thematic viewpoints as discovering the different disciplines archaeology needs.
3. Students will get accustomed with a specialized vocabulary inherent in all sciences.
4. Students will have to get accustomed with the french way of writing essays (especially for the midterm and final exams) based on a precise organization and a excellent formal presentation.
Course Organization
Students will get a coursepack at the beginning of the semester (CD's at the library). The coursepack is divided according to the different lectures we will focus on during the class. The coursepack lectures are an introductive and broad explanation of each period we will focus on. Its understanding is mandatory in order to go deeper into details during the class by the study of precise examples. Thus, the students will have to read the corresponding lecture BEFORE the class, answer the questions added to the text and read in the textbooks the indicated pages, in order :- First to answer together during the class, - Secondly, to go deeper into details,- Thirdly, to enlarge the discussion according to the student's interests.
Grading
Close to the exams taken in class, the students will have to answer four quizzes during the semester. The quizzes are series of questions dealing about the lectures studied during the class. The midterm and final exams taken in class are organized in two parts : a time line to fill in (a quarter of the grade) and pictures (seen during the class) to recognize and analyze (three quarters of the grade).
