Full Description

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Introduction to the economic analysis of development and growth policies.
A special mention is put to the current globalization context and to environmental issues.

The first part of the lecture involves a study of the main development and growth mechanisms.
Some topics will be more specifically deepened in the second part: environmental policies, the current global food crisis, resources scarcity, child labor issues, education and pro-poor policies.
The lecture deals with the effect of the globalization process on development and growth.
REQUIREMENT:
Students are required to read the various books and articles recommended in class, available at the library. The use of internet can be asked.

PART 2: DEVELOPMENT POLICIES: FOOD CRISIS, ENVIRONNEMENTAL POLICIES, EDUCATION
2.1 Trade, WTO and Growth
2.2 Environmental Problems and Policies
2.3 Global Food crisis et Food Security
2.4 The Debt crisis in Developing countries and the Financial Markets
2.5 Poverty, Fertility and Development Traps
2.6 Education and Child Labor

COURSES GRADING:
- Participation in class: it involves attendance in class, homework (summaries on readings, internet research, ...), quizzes in class on readings. (15 %)
- A mid-term examination (30 %)
- A final examination (30 %)
- An individual research report (investigation and analysis of a particular development program or a specific development topic) (25 %)
Absences and late arrival will be sanctioned.
