Full Description

This course is an introductory survey of European painting from the early Renaissance to the 20th century with a special emphasis on French painting. The course makes use of slides, textbooks and on-site visits to develop students' appreciation of art through the particular concepts and methodology of art historical analysis. Two mandatory field trips are included. The basic textbook is Stokstad, Art History, vol. II but other texts in next editions, such as Janson Gardner, and Gombrich may also be used.

Grade breakdown:

quizzes on reading assignments: 10%
two papers: 10% and 15%
midterm exam: 25%
final exam: 35%
class participation: 5%.
