Teaches students the formation and history of the modern French language.
This course will lead students to the discovery of the formation and history of the modern French language.
We will study and explain how the grammar of the language (morphology and syntax) and lexicon were formed: we will insist on debates that have pitted grammarians and stylists against each other on usage in order to shed light on the difficulties of the French language.
Outside of this historical and grammatical analysis, we will do a large number of sylistic analyses of texts from the 16th-20th centuries, in order to give evidence to the direct link that exists in French between grammar and rhetoric.
Ce cours emmènera les étudiants à la découverte de la formation et de l'histoire de la langue française moderne.
Nous étudierons et expliquerons comment se sont formès la grammaire de la langue (morphologie et syntaxe) et le lexique : nous insisterons sur les débats qui ont opposé grammairiens et stylisticiens autour de l'usage afin d'éclairer les difficultés de la langue française.
Outre cette analyse historique et grammaticale, nous ferons un grand nombre d'analyses stylistiques de textes du XVIe au XXe siècle afin de mettre en évidence le rapport étroit qui existe en français entre grammaire et rhétorique.
