Full Description

GOALS OF THE COURSE:
-To bring students to the advanced level in all areas of their French language skills, including listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and culture.
-To improve writing skills and expression of ideas in French. Emphasis is on pronunciation, basic grammar and vocabulary. Students engage in simple reading, writing and conversation. The culture of the French language is presented through stories, films, music and current events.
-To improve fluency and vocabulary in spoken French. To read and understand authentic texts, including texts obtained through French Web sites
-To identify and describe various aspects of French and Francophone culture, such as food, music, celebrations, social customs, landmarks, art, political and historical events, using a variety of sources including French Web sites.
-Describe the nature of language and culture by making comparisons of French with the students' native language and by making comparisons of French speaking cultures with the studens' own.

REQUIREMENTS:
-Daily attendance is required and classwork grades will be lowered for unexcused absences. See/email me if you have a real emergency.
-Do the reading assignments. You can't contribute to the discussion if you haven't done the reading! There will be short quizzes over readings, grammar, vocabulary.

GRADING
Approximate weighting of grades will be: classwork (including quizzes, informal oral presentations) -- 40%, compositions -- 30%, term paper -- 20%, oral presentation -- 10%.
