Full Description

I. Course description
The course introduces to theories of regional integration and analyses the process of the European economic integration - stages, policies, problems and solutions. The class will be partly dedicated to the methods of text discussion, a necessary skill for writing academic papers.

II. Rationale
The European integration process is the first successful example of a deep regional integration. The model of European integration is now transposed to other existing regional integration initiatives. he study of the European integration mechanisms is essential for the understanding of the regional integration initiatives worldwide as well as of the globalization process.


III. Texbooks and Workbooks
European Integration is a process, that is, it is changing over time. No book available in the library is up to date. Lectures will be given in the form of power-point presentations, and support materials (graphs, tables...) will be distributed in class. A list of important definitions to be learned will be distributed as well.
Texts for discussion will also be distributed in class.

IV. Course Objectives and Outcomes
• Students will learn important theoretical notions and models of regional economic integration
• Students will learn about the European integration process
• Students will acquire methodological skills of working with academic texts and newspapers
• Students will improve their oral presentation skills

V. Instructional Methods and Activities
Some classes will be dedicated to the description on the European integration process and will be given in the form of lectures. During these classes, student will be asked to take part through graph reading and analysis. Questions are welcomed.
There will also be class discussions where students will analyze and give their opinion on academic papers or articles from newspapers.
Current evaluation will include quizzes on important terms and concepts (a list of terms to work on will be available) as well as homework in the form of small theoretical exercises or graph analysis.


VI. Evaluation and Grading
Students accumulate points during the semester:
Quizzes (2 quizzes x 5 points per quiz) = 10 points
Homework (2 homework x 5 points per homework) = 10 points
Mid-term exam: 30 points
Final exam: 30 points
Text discussion: 20 points
TOTAL = 100 points.
(To have an excellent grade, you must work during all the semester!)

VII. Attendance
There is no reference book, so class attendance is a pre-requisite for successful completion of the course. No electronic version of lectures will be available. Students are responsible for finding out what they have missed if they have been absent from class. You may not take a missed test or exam without an appropriate excuse.
