The Modern Novel retraces history of novel-writing as new genre that was organized in the 17^th century (Madame de La Fayetter) to observe the truth of the contemporary world.  In the 18^th century the novel acts as a mirror of society (L’abbé Prévost, Diderot, Choderlos de Laclos, etc.).  In the 19^th century, the realist and naturalist (Balzac, Flaubert, Zola) became instruments for the contemporary society. <p>

The Modern Novel will be analyzed through about 10 contemporary authors who participated in the activities, interviews, conferences and the Journées des Ecrivains du Sud.  Their novels, read and analyzed, will be the subject of the assignments and lectures.  It is these writers and the influence they had on the great writers of the twentieth century (Proust, Gide, Giona, Camus, Malraux, etc.) that will be the novels studied from our period in history.

1. Le roman moderne retrace l’histoire du roman comme un genre nouveau qui s’organise à partir du XVIIe siècle (Mme de La Fayette) pour constater la vérité du monde contemporain. C’est surtout au XVIIIe siècle que le roman s’affirme comme miroir de la société (L’abbé Prévost, Diderot, Choderlos de Laclos,etc.). Au XIXe siècle, l’école réaliste et naturaliste (Balzac, Flaubert, Zola) en fait l’instrument d’étude privilégié de la société contemporaine.

2. Le roman contemporain sera analysé à partir d'une dizaine d'écrivains contemporains qui participeront à l'animation des cours à l'occasion des entretiens, des conférences et des Journées des Ecrivains du Sud.Leurs romans, lus et analysés, feront l'objet de comptes-rendus de lecture. C'est à partir de ces écrivains et de l'influence qu'ont eue sur eux les grands romanciers du XXe siècle (Proust, Gide, Giona, Camus, Malraux, etc.) que sera étudié le roman de notre époque.
