Full Description

The course explores representations of France in World War II in history, literature and media, in both the Occupied and Unoccupied Zones, the German presence, the government in Vichy and the Resistance. The curriculum includes an overview of institutional history during the period 1939 - 1945, but will concentrate on the responses of the civilian population, including collaboration and resistance, and the fate of displaced persons living in France at the time.
Students will read one work of fiction and one of non-fiction and take in 10 media productions (film, radio, television). They will be required to keep a journal of their studies, to write two papers and to sit for a final written exam. There will be one required class trip during the semester.

Texts: (required) Arthur Koestler, Scum of the Earth, Vercors, The Silence of the Sea. Optional texts include: Marc Bloch, Strange Defeat, Irene Nemirovsky, Suite Francaise, Marc Levy, The Children of Freedom.
