DESCRIPTIONThis course is intended for students at an upper intermediate or higher level in French. Readings of French masterpieces in poetry, fiction and drama have been selected from the nineteenth and twentieth century corpus.
Texts will be read in their social contexts.
Besides the comprehension of content, there will be an initiation to the fundamental techniques for critical reading of French literature.
The course will be devoted to a study of methods, vocabulary and theory to enhance the reading of representative literary selections.

Breakdown of final grade 1. Participation: 33% This is what "participation" means: --Presence -be present and punctual for each class. --Preparation -read and understand the texts before class. --Participation (in the strict sense) -express yourself during class in French. --Pertinence -be relevant as much as you can.
2. Short papers: 33% You will turn in a paper before the mid-semester exam and another one after. Each paper is worth 50%.
3. Exams: 33% You will take an oral mid-semester exam covering poetry and a written final exam covering fiction and drama. Each exam is worth 50%
