Description

Initiation to the language and techniques of art history and art appreciation. Survey of western art from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Study of major monuments from the period.

Text: M. Stokstad, Art History, vol. I (Janson, Gardner and Gombrich may also be used)

Requirements:
- attendance including two mandatory field trips (dates to be announced)
- in-class quizzes on reading assignments
- two 5-page essay papers
- -two exams (slide IDs, definition of terms, essays)
- class participation

Evaluation of final grade:

quizzes: 10%
two papers: 20%
midterm exam 25%
final exam: 30%
class participation: 15%.
