CONTENT INTRODUCTION
This course is designed for students who want to explore the personal and social need for clothing, studying what is beyond runways, products and the idea of beauty. Students will learn about the origins and functions of clothing, how clothing affects personality, the roles of clothing in society from ancient times to the present, the most important historic periods of fashion, and the contemporary clothing habits and characteristics.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course focuses on the socio-cultural significance of dress, offering students a framework for interpreting the meaning and use of dress in their personal lives as well as in the lives of others. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze dress as a communication system.

COURSE RATIONALE
During the course students will learn about the need for and the traditions of clothing, examining how clothing affects all aspects of ancient and modern society from private sexual life to the public and social spheres. This course will give students an overview of the identification of clothing groups while introducing the different characteristics of the fashion system, such as: uniforms, noble and royal garments, costumes and social attire. It will analyze the clothing system in all its aspects, such as: menswear and womenswear, working wear, accessories and decoration of the body.

The course will also examine the connection between the body and clothing, studying the individual and social motivations for wearing clothes, such as: covering, protection, embellishment, communication and interaction. Lastly, this course will foster a fuller understanding of the apparel industry, its principal designers and fashion companies, the technological innovations and major developments of the fashion industry.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course students will have a general understanding of clothing systems and cultures as well as a broader view of the importance of the clothing industry. They will also possess a more profound understanding of the impact of clothing in various societies, and they will be able to analyze dress as a communication system and recognize a variety of significant historic and ethnic costumes.

COURSE STRUCTION
The course will be structured as follows:
• Theoretical component: in-class lectures, video sessions and group critiques; with reading assignments, research projects, essays and tests.
• Practical component: in-class creative projects and collage and paper assignments to allow students to actually touch and completely understand the importance of clothing and appearance in modern society.

GRADING POLICY AND EVALUATION PROCEDURE
The evaluation of creative projects and exams will take into consideration the students’ fashion awareness, effort, class participation, and group critiques.
Mid-term and final exam will be structured as follows:

*Final exam: test plus a creative project: collage
