Course Description

This course combines a concise and informative historical survey of the image of the nude figure in classical to mannerist art with an in-depth artistic analysis of human anatomy. Beginning with a general study of the nude in classical sculpture, Proto-Renaissance mosaics, Early and High Renaissance painting and sculpture and finally in Mannerist art, the course will explore the development of the portrayal of human anatomy. The course will culminate with a standard study of human anatomy complemented with drawing with various traditional drafting materials from old master drawings, classical sculptures, Renaissance and mannerist works in sculpture and painting, and the nude model.

Class will meet six hours per week including in-class lectures, demonstrations, site visits and studio work.

Course descriptions may be subject to occasional minor modifications at the discretion of the instructor.
