Summary
CONTENT INTRODUCTION
Themes and authors in the history of photography will be presented and examined, with an ample selection of visual aids. Multi-media lessons will solicit the active participation of the students, include visits to exhibitions and lectures given by invited artists and art critics.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This lecture course introduces students to the history of photography in Europe and the United States from the late nineteenth century to the present. The primary task of the course will be to develop visual literacy and familiarity with the complex and contradictory genres of photographic images - between documentary
and discourse, between mass culture and avant-garde art. Particular emphasis will be given to Italian photography.
COURSE RATIONALE
This course is for those students interested in one of the most diffused media of contemporary times: photography. A chronological view of history of photography will enrich both art history students, who will find new acknowledgement, and photography students, who will gain a broad view to complete their technical learning on the subject .
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- identify major photographers and concepts in everyday life, at the movies, or in the news
- describe a work of art with the vocabulary and concepts of the field
- read and interpret a photograph
- discuss the interrelation between style, subject matter, time period, and geographical location.
- understand the philosophical, theoretical, and critical issues relevant to the history of photography
- creatively and flexibly understand, interpret, and criticize photographic images
- think critically about photographic images
- develop personal work and ideas by studying and engaging with historical and contemporary theory.
- develop the appropriate vocabulary for expressing theoretical issues
- develop writing skills and professionalism in written work
- develop communication skills and effective discussion methods through class participation.
GRADING
Regular and active classroom attendance; successful mid term and final examinations.
Grades are based on the following percentages:
*Attendance & In-Class Participation 10% (Student missing more than 20% of the course will fail.)
*Midterm examination. 25%
*Paper 20%
*Looking assignment 10%
*Final examination 35%
