Full DescriptionCourse DescriptionThis course examines the major trends of Italian art in the sixteenth century. Beginning with Michelangelo, whose effect on the art of the period was pervasive, this course will explore the progress and stylistic developments in painting, sculpture and architecture. Attention will be focused on the way art evolved in the most important artistic centers: Florence, Rome and Venice. This overview is not confined to works of art but includes the social, cultural, political, theological and patronage issues that affected their style, form and content. Slide lectures will be complemented with first-hand experience during site-visits in Florence, Siena and Rome. Course descriptions may be subject to occasional minor modifications at the discretion of the instructor. Textbooks During orientation at the Institute students will receive a list of textbooks they are required to purchase. Students should not purchase any texts before orientation.
