Summary

Designed for students and professional artists/designers who wish to expand their communication, promotion and portfolio skills allowing a greater opportunity in the job market.

Course Description:
Creating successful portfolios and acute presentation techniques are fundamental skills needed for employment in the art and design industry. Students will develop their selfpromotion skills by creating various industry related material including c.v. creation, and a professional portfolio for both print and multimedia presentations. The course will also cover interview and public speaking techniques. The course will culminate with the presentation of students’ portfolios to various professional artists and designers.

Content Introduction:
This course will give technical and theoretical instruction the field of self-promotion and professional portfolio development. Presentation and portfolio skills are the
utmost importance in successful marketing whether for a studio, freelance or proprietary ownership. The course will also cover, salary expectations, artistic/design
contracts, copyright and business strategies. The class will feature detailed lectures on public speaking and the use of art/design vocabulary, the development of a personal identity system including business cards, stationery and C.V. construction specifically for the art//design fields. Students will recognize the importance of visual presentation in a wide array of media and be able present themselves professionally for entrance into the job force or an expansion to a new industry. Throughout the course lectures and demonstration will cover techniques and regulations for running small studios in Europe and North America, job searching techniques as well as tutorials covering aspects of digital programs to aid the production of self -promotional packages. At the end of the term students will
present a professional portfolio with invaluable lectures from various professional artists, designers and managers.

Art Materials:
Students will sometimes be required to print out final samples of their work. (You will be advised in the introduction of the project) You will be required to
purchase paper and some materials. Students will probably wish to have multiple recordable Cds or a memory stick to make copies to their work created in class. You will also be required to purchase a sketch book (Idea Book) for the class where you will store sketches, notes and images for reference in the design process.
