Course Description

This course aims to introduce European politics to undergraduates. We will explore the topic through two main themes. First, the national level where focus is on democracy as it unfolds within the boundaries of the nation states. It will aim at giving the students insights into the political institutions, processes and policies of the major countries in Europe as well as an appreciation of the diversity of systems encountered in Europe. The main theme of the second part is the creation of unity on the supra-national level in Europe. The aim is to give the students a good grasp of what kind of political entity the European Union is and what it does. This will be accomplished by providing an overview of its history, institutions, main policies and its role in the international system. Particular emphasis shall put on comparing the EU and the process of European integration to other political entities and their formation.

Course descriptions may be subject to occasional minor modifications at the discretion of the instructor.
