Florence, Italy - About the City - Pizza![]() Students stop for a quick bite at one of Florence's many pizzarias.
Most pizzas in Italy are thin-crusted, but the authentic pizza from Napoli is thick-crusted and much more hearty. For a thicker crusted pizza, try any of the following. Reservations are encouraged.
ExpensiveLa Dantesca
Don't let the location surprise you! Even though it is very close to the train station, La Dantesca offers a sensational Neapolitan-style pizza. If you go with your friends, try the "pizza doppia", more than double the size of the regular pizza, brought to the table on a large round wooden pizza board. Besides the thick pizza, the Dantesca serves Fiarerelli, a popular dish from Naples of sautéed wild greens with oil and garlic.
ModerateTrattoria Santa Lucia
This restaurant is located just beyond the viale past the Port al Prato. Santa Lucia by far serves the best thick-crusted pizza in Florence. The pizzaiuolo (pizza-maker) is from Naples, the birthplace of the pizza. Try the classic Pizza Margherita served with the freshest mozzarella and tomato sauce with olive oil drizzled on the top. This is a pizza not to be missed!
Pizzeria Firenze Nova
The restaurant is located under modern apartment buildings in the middle of suburbia Firenze. You will need to take a cab and make reservations before going. The pizza is a thick-crusted dream while the restaurant itself resembles a stainless steel mess hall. The Margherita DOC pizza (DOC stands for the original) is a mouth-watering delight. Order the Mozzarella di Bufala ball for an antipasto, so fresh and tasty!
Il Pizzaiuolo
The rustic wooden tables and the beamed ceiling offer a warm and characteristic setting. The place is always bustling and filled with locals and foreigners. It is easier to get a table after 10:00 P.M. and it is imperative that you reserve ahead of time. The menu has other offerings but the pizza is the reason to come to the Pizzaiuolo. You will find yourself craving a second pizza... so order it, you may never get a table again!
Funicoli
Young, fun environment full of locals and great pizza! Lots of space, modern decor and two large art-deco wood-burning pizza ovens. A sensational black and white photo reprint from the 1950's of Sophia Loren serving up pizza dominates the main room. Mixed in with the traditional pizzas and pasta dishes are more avant-garde salads and side dishes. After dinner head to the Rotonda Pub on the same piazza for an after dinner drink and live entertainment.
