Summary

This course will deal with Spanish literature produced during the XX century, and will be divided into six sections. The first section will be on literature from the end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX. The second and third will be on the avant-garde literature up until the Civil War. The fourth, fifth and sixth will study Spanish literature from the post-war period until the present day. With this orientation the students are expected to obtain a dynamic vision of Spanish literature, with which they can interconnect the knowledge they may already possess, or with that which they may possess in the future.

2. End of century crisis and new poetry: from Antonio Machado to Juan
Ramón Jiménez.
3. End of century crisis and new novel: from Unamuno and Azorín to Pío Baroja.
4. End of century crisis and new theatre: Valle-Inclán.

II. The Modern Age and Literary Avant-garde.
5. The period between the wars and typology of the avant-garde modern age.
6. The essay modern age: Ortega y Gasset.
7. The poetic modern age: the poets of ’27.
8. The modern age in novel and prose: from Gabriel Miró to Ramón Gómez de la Serna.
9. The modern age in theatre: the plays of Federico García Lorca.

III. Social crises and the Modern Age in crisis.
10. Literature between purity and revolution.
11. Literature during the civil war.

IV. The post-war period and the re-humanizing process of Literature
12. Post-war and literature: the “triumphant literature”. Literature of the “interior exile”. Literature of exile: Francisco Ayala.
13. From existentialism to social realism in poetry: from Dámaso Alonso to Gabriel Celaya, Blas de Otero and José Hierro. The poets of the half century.
14. From existentialism to social realism in the novel: from Camilo José Cela and Miguel Delibes to the novelists of the half century.

V. Royal Spain as opposed to Official Spain and literary renovation and experimentation.

17. Renovation and experimentation in the novel: from Luis Martín Santos and Juan Bennet to Juan Goytisolo.
18. Renovation and experimentation in the theatre: from Fernando Arrabal and Francisco Nieva to the Independent Theatre Groups.

VI. Literary Tendencies in present-day Spain
19. Tendencies in present-day poetry: from intimist aesthetics to the “poetry of experience”.
20. Tendencies of the present-day novel: from verbal alchemy to the recuperation of realism; from narrative memorialism to the historical novel; open conception of the novel.
21. Tendencies of present-day theatre: from realist theatre to the neo-absurd; festive and spectacular experimentation of Els Comediants and la Fura dels Baus.

Activities
Reading the literary works, attention and participation in class, compulsory piece of work, mid-term and final exam.

Assessment
Reading the literary work (20%), attention and participation in class (15%), compulsory piece of work (20%), theoretical and practical final exam (45%).

Full Description

1. Introduction

The subject will cover Spanish Literature produced during the 20th-century, dividing the matter in six blocks. The first block will be dedicated to the literature of end of the 19th-century and the principles of the 20th. The second and third will contain vanguard literature until the civil war. The fourth, fifth and sixth will study Spanish literature from the postwar period to today. With this direction it is hoped that the students will obtain a dynamic vision of Spanish literature, by means of which they can interconnect the knowledge that they previously had, or that that they can have in the future.

I. The beginnings of literary modernity.

  1. Crisis of the end of the century and new literature: general expositions.
  2. Crisis of the end of the century and new poetry: from Antonio Machado to Juan Ramon Jiménez.
  3. Crisis of the end of the century and new novel: from Unamuno and Azorín to Pío Baroja.
  4. Crisis of the end of the century and new theater: Valle-Inclán.

II. Literary modernity and vanguards.

  1. The inter-war period and typology of vanguardist modernity.
  2. Ensayística modernity: Ortega and Gasset.
  3. Poetic modernity: los poetas del 27.
  4. Modernity in the novel and prose: from Gabriel Miró to Ramón Gómez de la Serna.
  5. Modernity in the theater: the theater of Federico García Lorca.

III. Social crises and modernity in crisis.

  2. Novel renovation and experimentation: from Luis Martín Santos and Juan Bennet to Juan Goytisolo.
  3. Renovation and experimentation in theater: from Fernando Suburb and Nieva to the Groups of Independent Theater.

VI. Tendencies of literature in present Spain.

  1. Tendencies of present poetry: from intimate estetism to the poetry "of experience".
  2. Tendencies of the present novel: from verbal alchemy to the recovery of realism; from narrative memorialism to the historical novel; open conception of the novel.
  3. Tendencies of present theater: from the realistic theater to the neoesperpético theater; the festive and spectacular experimentation of Els Comediants y La Fura dels Baus.

3. Activities

Literary work readings, attention and participation in class, partial and final obligatory work, examinations.

4. Evaluation

Literary work readings (20%), participation in class (15%), required work (20%), theoretical and practical final examination (45%).

5. Bibliography

1. Introducción

La asignatura tratará la literatura española producida durante el siglo XX, dividiéndose la materia en seis bloques. El primer bloque se dedicará a la literatura de finales del XIX y principios del XX. El segundo y tercero, contendrán la literatura de vanguardia hasta la guerra civil. El cuarto, quinto y sexto, estudiarán la literatura española desde la posguerra hasta hoy. Con esta orientación se pretende que los alumnos obtengan una visión dinámica de la literatura española, mediante la cual puedan interconectar los conocimientos que sobre ella posean previamente, o los que puedan poseer en el futuro.

II. Modernidad y Vanguardias Literarias.

  1. El período de entreguerras y tipología de la modernidad vanguardista.
  2. La modernidad ensayística: Ortega y Gasset.
  3. La modernidad poética: los poetas del 27.
  4. La modernidad en la novela y en la prosa: de Gabriel Miró a Ramón Gómez de la Serna.
  5. La modernidad en el teatro: el teatro de Federico García Lorca.

  4. Del existencialismo al socialrealismo en teatro: de Buero Vallejo a Alfonso Sastre.

V. La España Real frente a la España Oficial y renovación y experimentación literarias.

  1. Renovación y experimentación en poesía: tendencias experimentales, culturistas, intimistas: de los "novísimos" a Antonio Carvajal.
  2. Renovación y experimentación en novela: de Luis Martín Santos y Juan Bennet a Juan Goytisolo.
  3. Renovación y experimentación en teatro: de Fernando Arrabal y Francisco Nieva a los Grupos de Teatro Independiente.

VI. Tendencias de la Literatura en la España actual.

  1. Tendencias de la poesía actual: del intimismo esteticista a la poesía "de la experiencia".
  2. Tendencias de la novela actual: de la alquimia verbal a la recuperación del realismo; del memorialismo narrativo a la novela histórica; concepción abierta de la novela.
  3. Tendencias del teatro actual: del teatro realista al teatro neoesperpético; la experimentación festiva y espectacular de Els Comediants y La Fura dels Baus.

3. Actividades

Lecturas de obras literarias, atención y participación en clase, trabajo obligatorio, exámenes parcial y final.

4. Evaluación

Lecturas de obras literarias (20%), participación en clase (15%), trabajo oblicatorio (20%), examen final teórico y práctico (45%).
