Full Description

During the semester Language and Culture program, the course is offered in both English and Spanish. During the summer Intensive Language and Culture program, it is only offered in Spanish.

This course aims at explaining and studying in depth the basic points considered to be the basis of Spanish culture. Stereotypes will be studied just as much as specific characteristics of a set of subjects designed to complement the Hispanic Studies course which cover cultural aspects of different fields and which will be interrelated, whenever possible. At the same time a thorough and detailed study will be undertaken of the phenomena considered universally to be genuinely Spanish.

SYLLABUS

Spanish culture / Andalusian culture. Revision of clichés.
Spain: Who are we, where are we from and where are we going?
The Spains: geographical, linguistic and cultural diversity.
Andalusia: clichés and realities.
The Bullfights: symbol, rite and metaphor.
Flamenco and ‘duende’ (magical quality or energy).
The other musics. The other languages: in Castillian, Gallego, Catalan, Basque, etc.
Gastronomy. The Mediterranean diet. Olive oil and wine.
Religion and folklore, expressions: Easter week, the pilgrimages.
The Spanish family structure.
Sexual stereotypes. Archetypes: Don Juan, Carmen, machismo, the mother.
Reality and Quixotism.
Present-day Spain: principal ideological, political, cultural, etc. tendencies.
Spain as part of the E.U.
Spain in relation to other regions of the world: Latin-America, North Africa and the Middle East.

ACTIVITIES

As well as the usual class lectures, an instructive, complementary and recommendable source of information will be a series of articles on specific topics proposed by the teacher. These will be either from books, magazines or newspapers. Also, students will view or listen to material, which the teacher considers appropriate to clarify topics studied in class, in the multimedia room. It will be compulsory for the students to participate in the programmed debates in groups or the class as a whole, between 7 and 10 hours from the 40 hours of the course will be spent on this. It is advisable although not compulsory for the students to participate in the cultural visits organised each term in the Centre of Modern languages which aim to cover multiple aspects of the social-cultural Spanish reality in the specific area of Granada.

ASSESSMENT

- Class attendance is compulsory and will be taken into account in the final mark.

- Attention and class participation will be assessed up to 20%.

- The presentation of short pieces of work on written tests (books, press) and participation in debates will carry up to 40%.

- There will be two eliminatory exams, one mid-term and the other at the end of the term; both will count for 40% of the final mark.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

As this course has been designed as interactive and with many reference texts as the basis (books, newspapers and magazines, films, radio programmes, music, television documentaries, etc.) the teacher, in the course of the classes, will propose study materials for each of the topics in the syllabus.

1. Introducción

Con esta asignatura se pretende explicar y profundizar en los considerados puntos básicos de lo que ha dado en llamar cultura española. Se insistirá tanto en los tópicos como en las características específicas de los diferentes aspectos de un temario muy concreto concebido a modo de complemento de las otras materias del Curso de Estudios Hispánicos dirigidas a cubrir aspectos culturales de diferentes campos y que en este apartado en cuestión interrelacionaremos siempre que sea posible, al mismo tiempo que se hará un estudios exhaustivo y pormenorizado de los fenómenos considerados universalmente como españoles genuinos.

2. Programa

Cultura española / Cultura andaluza. Revisión de tópicos.
España: ¿Quiénes somos, de dónde venimos, a dónde vamos?
Las Españas: diversidades geográfica, lingüística, cultural.
Andalucía: tópicos y realidades.
Los Toros: símbolo, rito y metáforo.
El flamenco y el duende.
Las otras músicas. Las otras lenguas: en castellano, gallego, catalán, vasco, etc.
La gastronomía. La dieta mediterránea. El aceite y el vino.
Religión y folklore, manifestaciones: la Semana Santa, las romerías.
La estructura familiar española.
Tópicos sexuales. Arquetipos: el Don Juan, la Carmen, el machismo, la madre.
Realidad y Quijotismo.
La España actual: principales tendencias ideológicas, políticas, culturales, etc.
España parte de la U.E.
España en relación con otras regiones del mundo: América Latina, El Magreb y Oriente Medio.

3. Actividades

Además del seguimiento habitual de las explicaciones de clase, se considerará un elemento instructivo, complementario y recomendable la lectura de artículos sobre temas concretos proporcionados por el profesor ya sea de libros o prensa, así como la visualización o audición en la medioteca del CLM de aquellos materiales que el profesor considere oportunos para clarificar diferentes asuntos tratados en el aula.

Imprescindible a efectos de evaluación será la participación del alumno en los debates programados para realizar tanto en grupos como con toda la clase en general; a esta actividad se dedicará, según los casos, entre 7 y 10 de las 40 horas de que consta esta asignatura.

Es aconsejable, aunque no obligatoria, la participación en las visitas culturales programadas trimestralmente del CLM que pretenden cubrir múltiples aspectos de la realidad sociocultural española en el espacio concreto de Granada.

4. Evaluación

La asistencia a clase es obligatoria y se tendrá en cuenta a efectos de evaluación final.
La atención y participación en clase se valorará en un 20%.
La presentación de los pequeños trabajos sobre textos escritos (libros, prensa) así como la participación en debates se valorará en un 40%.
Habrá dos exámenes eliminatorios de materia, uno a mitad del cuatrimestre y otro al final del mismo; ambas pruebas se valorarán en un 40% del resultado final.

5. Bibliografía

Al haberse concebido la asignatura como una materia interactiva y con multiplicidad de documentos de base (libros, prensa, fragmentos de radio, cine, música, documentales televisivos, etc.), en el transcurso de las clases, y en función de lo estudiado, el profesor propondrá unos materiales de estudio necessarios para cada uno de los temas propuestos en la asignatura.
