Summary

During the Language and Culture semester program, this course is offered in both English and Spanish. During the summer Intensive Spanish Language and Culture program, it is only offered in Spanish.

This course aims to provide the students with general knowledge of Spain through the study of natural environment, population, economic activities and regional reality.

Syllabus
1. General introduction. Unity and diversity on the Iberian Peninsula and the European context. Spain and its relation with North Africa.
2. General characters of the physical environment. The relief. The climate. The water areas. The natural vegetation.
3. The Spanish population. Evolution. Natural movements. Geographical distribution.
4. General characteristics of the Spanish economy. Principal elements and factors. The stages of contemporary economy. The productive sectors. Spain and the European Union.
5. The regional division in Spain. Historical antecedents. The Constitution of 1978 and the definition of the autonomous model. The regional Spanish map. Atlantic Spain. Galicia. Asturias. Cantabria. The Basque Country.
6. The Ebro Valley. Jurisdiction Community of Navarra. The Rioja region. Community of Aragón.
7. Mediterranean Spain. Catalunya. Community of Valencia. Region of Murcia.
8. The Meseta. Community of Castilla-León. Community of Castilla-La Mancha. Extremadura. Community of Madrid.
9. Autonomous Community of Madrid. The physical environment. The population. The economic activities. Regional unity and diversity.

Assessment
Class attendance and participation will be taken into account in the assessment. The final exam will consist of a written test on one of two given topics. If the students wish they may do an extra piece of work on a specific subject from the syllabus which will go towards the final mark, but this is entirely voluntary.

Esta asignatura pretende un conocimiento general del país a través del estudio geográfico del medio natural, la población, las actividades económicas y la realidad regional.

2. Programa

1. Introducción general. Unidad y diversidad de la Península Ibérica. España y el contexto europeo. España y su relación con América y el Mahgreb.
2. Caracteres generales del medio físico. El relieve. El clima. Las aguas. La vegetación natural.
3. La población española. Evolución. Movimientos naturales. Distribución geográfica.
4. Caracteres generales de la economía española. Principales elementos y factores. Las etapas de la economía contemporánea. Los sectores productivos. España y la Unión Europea.
5. La división regional española. Antecedentes históricos. La Constitución de 1978 y la definición del modelo autonómico. El mapa regional español.
6. La España Atlántica. Galicia. Asturias. Cantabria. El Pals Vasco.
7. El Valle del Ebro. Comunidad Foral de Navarra. La Rioja. Comunidad de Aragón.
8. España mediterránea. Cataluña. Comunidad Valenciana. Región de Murcia.

3. Evaluación

La evaluación del alumnado tendrá en cuenta la asistencia y la participación en clase. El examen final consistirá en una prueba escrita en la que habrá que exponer un tema amplio o ensayo a elegir entre dos propuestos. La realización de algún trabajo específico sobre el temario tendrá carácter voluntario y servirá para completar adecuadamente la evaluación final.
