Summary
This course aims to cover the following objectives which are of a general character:
- The student gains knowledge of the essential phenomena of the History of Spain in the Modern Age.
- An understanding of the historical context within which the creations (language, culture, art, literature) are developed, which is the object of study in other
courses offered in the Centre of Modern Languages.
- A vision as a whole of modern Spain in relation to the European and American reality.
These general objectives are clarified by means of the following more specific aspects:
- Insistence on social-cultural phenomena in the Modern History of Spain, and their relations with foreign countries.
- Attention to the territorial characteristics of the Modern Age, as much in the Iberian peninsula as in the rest of Europe and America.
- Assessment throughout the period of the role played by Spain in the international agreement.
- Analysis of the most outstanding milestones and historical processes of modern Spain.
- Guidance on the sources and bibliography to study in depth Spain in the Modern Age.

3. The Spanish population in the XVI and XVII centuries.
4. Expansion and crisis of the Spanish economy (XVI and XVII centuries).
5. The social class society in Modern Spain.
6. Political structure of the Spanish monarchy.
7. Charles V and his epoch.
8. Reformation and counter-reformation in Spain.
9. The Hispanic empire during the reign of Philip II
10. The Spanish depletion. Philip III and Philip IV.
11. Charles II and the War of the Succession.
12. Culture and mentality in XVI and VXII century Spain.
13. The Spanish population in the XVIII century.
14. Structure and economic situation in XVIII century Spain.
15. The XVIII century Spanish society.
16. Tradition and reformation in the political-administrative structure.
17. Church and religion in XVIII century Spain.
18. Politics in the first half of the XVIII century. Philip V and Fernando VI.
19. Spain during the reign of Charles III.
20. Charles IV and the crisis of the Former Regime.
21. Enlightenment culture in XVIII century Spain.
Assessment
The students’ performance will be assessed on two written exams throughout the semester on the course content. The mid-term exam as well as the final exam will be made up of short questions on the basic course content developed in class, evaluating essentially the vision as a whole of the phenomena and their relation to others. Also, class attendance and active participation in the commentary on the supplementary material previously given to the students will be assessed.

1. Introduction
This course covers the following formative objectives of general character:
- Knowledge on the part of students of the essential phenomena of the History of Spain in the Modern Age.
- Understanding of the historical context in which creations are developed (language, culture, art, literature), which is also an object of analysis in other subjects that are taught at the Center of Modern Languages.
- Vision of modern Spain, in relation to the European and American reality.
These general goals are achieved within the more specific teachings that follow:
- Attention to the territorial peculiarities of the Modern Age, as much in the Iberian Peninsula as in the rest of Europe and America.
- Valuation throughout the period of the role played by Spain in the international concert.
- Historical analyses of the landmarks and processes most unique of Modern Spain.
- Directions on the sources and bibliography to deepen the knowledge of Spain in the Modern Age.

- Carlos V and his era.
- The Reformation and Counter-Reform in Spain.
- The Hispanic empire of Felipe II.
- The Spanish Exhaustion. Felipe III and Felipe IV.
- Carlos II and the War of Succession.
- Culture and mentality in the Spain of the 16th- and 17th-centuries.
- The Spanish population in the 18th-century.
- Economic structure and conjuncture in the Spain of the 18th-century.
- The Spanish society of the 18th-century.
- Tradition and reform in the political-administrative structure.
- Church and religion in 18th-century Spain.
- The policy in first half of the 18th-century. Felipe V and Fernando IV.
- Spain of Carlos III.
- Carlos IV and the crisis of the Old Regime.
- The culture illustrated in 18th-century Spain.
3. Evaluation
The students' work will be evaluated through two tests taken throughout the term on the content of the subject. Both the mid-term and final exams will consist essentially of brief questions on the basic contents developed in class, valuing the vision of set of the phenomena and its relation with others.
