Summary

INTRODUCTION
This course will provide a comparison in the study of politics.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will learn about the classifications of Political Regimes, including totalitarian, authoritarian, and liberal democratic regimes. Students will look at a majority democracy versus a democracy of consensus. Following this, the course will focus on the classification of the forms of government. These include directorial systems, presidential systems, and parliamentary systems.

Within the political systems of Europe, students will focus on parliamentary regimes, including the one-party parliamentary government, a coalition parliamentary government, a prime ministerial government, a partnership democracy, and a “partitocracy”. Following the study of parliamentary regimes, the course will delve into directorial regimes and semi-presidential systems.

The last part of the course will look at the Spanish political system. This includes the political history of contemporary Spain, the Spanish Constitution of 1978 and the political transition to democracy. In addition, students will study the powers of state, the territorial organization of the state and the electoral and political parties of Spain.

EVALUATION
The final grade will be determined by 1) attendance; 2) class participation; 3) two exams that will be given during the course.
