Summary

The period which this course covers is one of the most fundamental, not only to understand Spanish Literature, but also to understand the culture and history of Spain. Therefore the aims of this course are to introduce the students to texts which they usually are not acquainted with, while at the same time studying in depth the language being in contact with the great masters of our literature.

Syllabus
1. The birth of Spanish literature in the Middle Ages. Main genres. The romances. La Celestina.
2. Introduction to the Renaissance period. Specific problems of the Spanish Renaissance. The linguistic, political and religious unity. Humanism. The literary genres.
3. Petrarchism in Spain. Garcilaso de la Vega. The new metrical structures. Love and nature in his poetry.
4. The religious literature. Fray Luis de León. Works in prose. Poetry. His style.
5. The picaresque novel. El lazarillo de Tormes, first “modern” novel. Structure of the work.
6. Miguel de Cervantes. Poetic works. Dramatic works. Cervantes and the novel of his time.
7. Miguel de Cervantes. El ingenioso hidalgo D. Quijote de la Mancha. Structure of the novel. Transcendence of Quijote.
8. Introduction to the Baroque period. Spain of the XVIIth century. The crisis of Renaissance idealism. Baroque aesthetics. Literary language: the literary genres. Poetry. The novel. Theatre.
9. Baroque poetry. The poetic language of D. Luis de Góngora. Classification of his works. The great poems.
10. Francisco de Quevedo. His complex personality. Quevedo, the prose writer. Metaphysical, satirical , amorous and moral poet.
11. The theatre in the XVII century. The Spanish stage. Formation of comedy.
12. The structure of dramatic works. Theatre as an ideological instrument. Main authors.
13. Lope de Vega as creator of the Spanish comedy. Fuenteovejuna as a drama of honor and a historical work
15. Calderón de la Barca. His contribution to Baroque theatre. La vida es sueño. Los autos sacramentales.

Activities
The course will be based on commentary of texts which the teacher will mostly provide, and on books which the students will read themselves. This will be supplemented with other cultural activities organized by the Centre or by the University (visits, conferences, etc.,) which have relation to the syllabus.

Assessment
Assessment will be based on class attendance and participation (20%), reading and expression (30%) and two written exercises (50%).

1. Introduction

The period that includes this subject is one of the fundamental ones, not only to understand Spanish literature, but to understand the culture and history of Spain. For that reason the objectives in this course are to introduce to the student the texts which he often does not know, and simultaneously to provide the possibility to him of deepening his knowledge of the language, while putting him in contact with the great masters of literature.

  2. Introduction to the Renaissance. Specific problems of the Spanish Renaissance. The linguistic, political and religious unit. Humanism. Literary types.

  4. Religious Literature. Fray Luis de Léon. Works in prose. Poetry. Its style.

3. Activities

The development of the course will come from the commentary of texts that the professor will mostly contribute, and of the readings that the students will have to do on their own. It will be completed with other cultural activities, organized by the Center or the University (visits, conferences, etc.), in relation to the program.

4. Evaluation

Attendance and class participation are worth 20%, reading and expression are worth 30%, and there will be two written exercises worth 50%.

1. Introducción

El periodo que abarca esta asignatura es uno de los fundamentales, no sólo para comprender la Literatura Española, sino para comprender la cultura y la historia de España. Por eso los objetivos en esta materia son, introducir al alumno en unos textos que no suele conocer, y a la vez proporcionarle la posibilidad de profundizar en su conocimiento de la lengua, al ponerlo en contacto con los grandes maestros de nuestra literatura.

2. Programa

  1. El nacimiento de la Literatura Española en la Edad Media. Principales géneros. Los romances. La Celestina.
  2. Introducción al Renacimiento. Problemas específicos del Renacimiento español. La unidad lingüística, política y religiosa. El Humanismo. Los géneros literarios.
  3. El petrarquismo en España. Garcilaso de la Vega. Las nuevas estructuras métricas. Amor y naturaleza en su poesía.
  4. La literatura religiosa. Fray Luis de León. Obras en prosa. Poesía. Su estilo.
  5. La novela picaresca. El Lazarillo de Tormes, primera novela "moderna". Estructura de la obra.
  6. Miguel de Cervantes. Obra poética. Obras dramáticas. Cervantes y la novela de su tiempo.
  7. Miguel de Cervantes. El ingenioso hidalgo D. Quijote de la Mancha. Estructura de la novela. Transcendencia del Quijote.

3. Actividades

El desarrollo del curso se hará a partir del comentario de textos, que la profesora aportará en su mayoría, y de las lecturas que los alumnos deberán hacer por su cuenta. Se completará con otras actividades culturales, organizadas por el Centro o por la Universidad (visitas, conferencias, etc.), que tengan relación con el programa.

4. Evaluación

Se evaluará la asistencia y participación en las clases (20%), la lectura y expresión (30%) y se realizarán dos ejercicios escritos (50%).
