Madrid, Spain - Academic Program - Hispanic Studies for Heritage Learners (HS)

This program is designed to bring American students whose geographical or familial origins link them to a Spanish speaking community within or outside the U.S.  Students can expect to accomplish the following over the course of the semester:

  • Deepen their understanding of what it means to be from a Spanish speaking culture
  • Bridge divides and eliminate stereotypes that are often found within distinct communities
  • Address hispanic identity from a linguistic, literary, historical, sociological, political, and cultural point of view
  • Honor the traits that make each individual's cultural heritage distinct, rich, and multifaceted and explore the significance of those traits within different contexts
In this program, students will take the four-week intensive language and culture program (80 contact hours).  Upon completion of this program, students will select at least three of the following courses:

  • History of the Hispanic World
  • Hispanic Languages, Literatures, and Regional Linguistic Distinctions
  • Language and Identity
  • Hispanic Geopolitics
  • Hispanic Culture
These courses all meet for 45 contact hours (3 semester credits).  All courses are taught entirely in Spanish.  Students will supplement these courses with an intermediate or advanced Spanish language class or others of their choice from the university course catalog.
