We will look at different regions that make up Canada and how they relate to Canadian national identity. This is not to suggest that regions such as “the West” or the “Maritimes” or “Atlantic Canada” have a homogeneous identity; on the contrary, these configurations are subject to change over time. Regionalism also plays an important role on many different levels from geography to politics. Other markers of identity, such as ethnicity, religion or socio-economic factors, in turn influence regional identity. The course aims to give an overview of the history and current dynamics surrounding the debate by focusing on selected examples.
