Full Description

The terms "English humour" or "British Comedy" relate to a general feature of British culture, which has always focused on the "humorous" aspects of life. The class will give an insight into the tradition of British comedy. Students will learn about the general features of this genre of comedy and the way the genre has been developed within literature and the theatre. Building upon this foundation of knowledge, the class will learn to specify the filmic developments and will be given an overview of the comedy throughout film history. With regard to more contemporary film production, students will learn about the specific transformations of the comedy as it occurs in the 'comedy of manners', which is taken from a traditional literary model and then re-applied in international successful productions such as "Four Weddings and a Funeral" or "Bridget Jones". The class will end with a look at contemporary television comedy, such as 'The Office'. The course will be held in English.
