Aims and Content:

Fantasy Literature is one of the most popular forms of British (and also American) literature and culture which is not only represented in texts but also in movies and TV series. After a general discussion of the nature of 'fantasy' (structural or plot-based definition) the following novels will be analysed and discussed:

  • J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit (1937),
  • C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950),
  • Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn (1968), Eon Colfer, Artemis Foul (2001).

There will be a compulsory introductory test about the contents of these four novels in the first session.
