Full Description

Romanticism, Victorianism, Decadence - these are three of the ever-returning key terms that surface in discussions of 19th-century English literature. In this lecture series, I will give an overview of the literary production of this century, looking at the central authors and texts. The lectures will start with the Romantic poets and then have a look at other developments in 19th-century literature, with special emphasis on novels by authors such as Austen, the Brontës, George Eliot, Dickens and Hardy. We shall finish with a consideration of fin-de-siècle writing by Oscar Wilde and others.
