Content

The purpose of this class is to examine the various ways in which language has been an object of study as well as to familiarize the student with the terminology and methodology of 20th century linguistic science. It provides the theoretical and descriptive foundations for the investigation and solution of language-related problems, especially those of language use, but also problems of psycholinguistics and historical linguistics. As a consequence, this class tends to be interdisciplinary in many ways.

Throughout the class students will be required to analyze language data from a variety of different languages in order to develop a feeling for and proficiency in the proper techniques of linguistic analysis.

Class Requirements

The credits will be awarded as follows:

• one final exam to be written in class (80%)

• 5 out of 12 worksheets (20%)
