Whether in antiquity, during the Middle Ages, or in the early modern period, individuals appear to have always felt the need to give record of their travels. The aim of this course is to provide an overview of different kinds of travel narratives, from medieval travellers’ accounts of their pilgrimages (or their participation in the Crusades, for that matter) via John Mandeville’s Travels (1356) and the period of early modern exploration to the eighteenth-century ‘Grand Tour.’ In the course thereof, we will focus mainly on generic questions as well as the different ways of conceptualizing otherness.
A detailed reading list will be available at the beginning of August and will be emailed to you once you have signed up for the class.
