Full Description

The course will give an introduction into different living spheres of Germans, their everyday life; current affairs, history, political system, society, geography, traditions of Germany etc.  The class starts with an overview over pre-Germany history. The ways will be explored how the German nation came into being as well as how the society was built up. This will also be looked at within the framework of an emerging Europe. The European Integration will be a major part as well. Important personalities from German history and present will be presented. German societal problems like extremism, the reunification, the disenchantment with politics and the relations with the neighbours in Europe and partners abroad are further topics.  The students shall actively take part in the course; it shall not be a lecture. Discussions, group works and homework assignments will be given to the participants. Additionally, we will watch some movies and have some excursions, e.g. a walk around Marburg to explore the local history and a trip to Berlin.
