Thematic structure:

The EU is a supranational global player with (more or less) well defined strategic interests in international economy, sustainable ecological development, foreign and security policy and development policies. At the beginning of the 21st century, the international system has to face four major challenges: 1. severest economic depression since 1945, 2. ecological determination, 3. terrorism and further nuclear armament, 4. growing inequality and injustice between the industrialized states and less developed societies.

We will analyse and discuss how Germany and the EU will tackle these four problems. The students will get an overview of EU’s role in world affairs and an introduction in European polity, politics, and policies.

Method:

Short lectures by professor, class presentation, group work. Students will be supplied with hand-outs.

Assessment:

Oral presentation, oral participation in discussions.
