Aims and Content:

This lecture asks for the determinants of economic growth and links modern growth theories to actual development issues.

The topics covered are:

  • Evolutionary theories of economic development: a secular perspective
  • Role of institutional change for growth and development
  • Combining factors of production and the process of economic growth
  • Neoclassical growth theory
  • Theories on endogenous growth
  • Implications for economic development
  • Limitations of growth

Target skills

Students will get an overview on guiding theoretical concepts on growth and development. These models will be applied to an empirical context enabling students to better understand the driving forces of growth in different stages of development as well as its embeddedness in the institutional environment and possible limitations to growth.
