Summary

Full Description

Until the Second World War five million Jews lived in Eastern Europe. The annihilation through the Holocaust, different forms of governmental and societal anti-Semitism, and emigration waves into the United States and Israel have reduced this number massively. After the fall of Socialism another great migration wave set in. But now a slow re-emerging of Jewish life can be seen in Middle and Eastern Europe.

The seminar puts emphasis onto the current situation of Jewish people in Eastern Europe. At the same time we want to reconstruct the history of the so called Eastern Jewry. From a theoretical perspective we will turn towards the anti-Semitism research and its appliance in Eastern Europe. We will put our main focus on the countries of Poland, Lithuania and the Ukraine.
