Full Description

Aims and Content:

We will study a number of central texts from various genres - novels, poems, plays - in order to get an overview of the development of English literature in the eighteenth century. Close reading of the texts will be supplemented by a study of the major theoretical statements of eighteenth-century authors and by a look at their historical and political background.

Bibliography:

One of the standard anthologies of 18th-century literature (Norton or Longman).
