Full Description

The class will be blended, i.e. students will study online on the world’s largest E-Learning platform in linguistics: The Virtual Linguistics Campus (www.linguistics-online.com) and deepen their understanding of the topics discussed in the virtual sessions and in the workbook through various activities during fortnightly in-class sessions with the instructor.

Content

This class provides an overview of the languages of the world displaying geographical, demographic, and linguistic information. We will examine the various ways in which language has been an object of study as well as to familiarize the student with the terminology and methodology of 20th century linguistic science.

Throughout the class students will be required to analyze language data from a variety of different languages in order to develop a feeling for and proficiency in the proper techniques of linguistic analysis.
