Full Description

Aims and Content:

This class aims to introduce students to key works from the rich literary heritage of the late Middle Ages. After a brief survey of the general cultural and historical backgrounds as well as a very short introduction to Middle English, we will read (excerpts of) works representing the most important medieval literary genres: epic (historical) poetry, lyric, saints` lives, allegory, and drama. The main focus of this class, however, will be on (Arthurian) romance, taking into consideration also the fascination with the latter in present-day popular culture.

A detailed reading list will be available at the beginning of August and will be emailed to you once you have signed up for the class.

Prerequisites:

Introduction to Literature, willingness to work

Assessment:

Participation and written assignments (60%), oral presentation (40%) for 4 ECTS-Points; participation and written assignments (30%), oral presentation (20%), research paper (50%) for 6 ECTS-Points.
