Full Description

Thematic structure:

Since the 1960s, architects have returned to elements of the traditional in contemporary architecture and city planning, confronting issues of old and new within the urban image. Students will be given an overview these issues in architecture and then we shall look at various cities in which concepts of old and new are addressed in unique ways, including: Rome, Milan, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin and Marburg itself. Here we have a full spectrum, Rome typically associated with the old and Berlin with the modern. Yet architects have attempted “the new” in Rome and Berlin has been searching for “the old” since Reunification. We shall focus on such points as architecture as a form of communication within the urban space and the image of the city which architecture mediates.

Assessment:

Students are expected to contribute to a lively class discussion, and will be given a short essay examination.

Taught in week 3 and 4 of program.
