Full Description

The class will be blended, i.e. students will study online on the world’s largest E-Learning platform in linguistics: The Virtual Linguistics Campus (www.linguistics-online.com) and deepen their understanding of the topics discussed in the virtual sessions and in the workbook through various activities during fortnightly in-class sessions with the instructor.

 ContentThe fist part of this class introduces students to the basic concepts underlying the production, perception, and physics of speech. In the second part, we will discuss the most important theoretical foundations of phonology using as many languages (from the VLC language index) as possible. In particular the following topics will be covered:• phonological units• phonological theory

• comparative phonology

 Class RequirementsThe credits will be awarded as follows:• one final exam to be written in class (80%)

• 5 out of 12 worksheets (20%)
