Full Description

The country at the cape of Africa is one of the few positive examples in African political history. Without much violence the transition from the Apartheid regime to a democratic nation was managed. The trenches between the former white elite and the previously suppressed blacks, coloureds and Asians did not lead to some kind of civil war. Through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and other measures the people of the different groups were reconciled. The Rainbow Nation is nowadays the positive model for how it should be. But under the surface there are still imminent conflicts which might erupt in the near future. AIDS, crime, violence, the unsolved issue of the land redistribution, the until now unfair share of wealth, housing and water provision are but a few problems South Africa has to deal with at the moment. At the same time the politicians try their stance on several foreign policy matters. In the seminar we will focus on these current issues and look for solutions. The course will be held in English.
