Aims and Content:

This lecture will provide an introduction to Shakespeare's tragedies, set against the cultural and theatrical background of his plays and also against the works of some of his contemporaries, such as Thomas Kyd (The
Spanish Tragedy
), Christopher Marlowe (Dr Faustus) and John Webster (The Duchess of Malfi). Dramas by Shakespeare to be discussed will include: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, Hamlet, King Lear, Timon of Athens.
