Full Description

In this overview course the South African past and present shall be presented in movies from different eras. We will watch promotional movies about the beauty of a South Africa worth a visit, documentations about topics like HIV/AIDS, the former prison island Robben Island, and the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Also there will be feature films about the time of the Apartheid, e.g. the death of Steve Biko 1977 or the resistance in the black townships, as well as on more current events like the dealing with past atrocities in the new democracy. But also new problems of the society will be shown. The movies chosen will be characterized by contrarian angles and perspectives. Both the story of their making and their embedding in South African history and political developments and conflicts will be presented. Movie presentations and lecture parts will alternate.  There will, however, also be room for discussion.
