Read the full description for the German Language and Elective (GLE) track.
During the first six weeks of the program, students will take an intensive German language course and the German culture class. Students will take a placement exam in order to determine the appropriate language level.
All electives meet for 48 contact hours. Courses are taught either entirely in English or both in English and German. For the courses with both languages, a two-hour lecture weekly will be in German, with four tutorials each week in English to cover what was in the lecture as well as new information. The dual language courses are appropriate for students at all levels of German. Because students will have had an intensive German course prior to the start of the electives, sitting in on the German lecture is recommended as a way of improving language skills. Generally grades are given for oral work (presentations, performance in class, etc.; 60% of the grade) and written work (reports, bibliographies, homework, essays, etc.; 40% of the grade). The deadlines for professors to submit class descriptions is much later at German universities than what most international universities are used to. The reason lies in the varying semester times here in Europe. The classes for the spring are published in January. The classes for the fall will only be known around June etc. We recommend taking examples of classes of the respective past semester. In most cases similar courses are being offered again in a year’s time (we do not offer the same classes every year/semester. Introductory classes, however, mostly are repeated). Maybe this gives an idea of what there is and what could be used towards a degree.
Linguistics and Language Technology courses are offered through the Virtual Linguistics Campus. Classes will be a combination of on-line coursework and in-class sessions.
