2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and
the establishment of the European Economic Community (EEC), now the European
Union (EU).
The process of European integration has developed around two
main threads; trade liberalization and a unified monetary policy. Both tariff
and non-tariff barriers to trade have been liberalized and the EU is now
considered a free trade zone. Some countries have also given up national
currencies and adopted a single currency — the Euro. These countries take part
in the European Monetary Union (EMU), characterized by a unified monetary
policy.
From a political viewpoint, a process of gradual enlargement
has widened the membership of the EU from the original six members to the
current twenty-seven. The course addresses these topics by looking at empirical
evidence and current and theoretical developments.
