The course will present a number of problems that help to
exemplify the factors constituting the “figurative expression” in terms of the
client’s intention, the invention of the artist and spectator reception. The
course will help understand why and how some forms of modern visual
communication can trace their roots to the artistic production of the past,
especially from the early Renaissance era onwards. The overall theme of the
course will address what lies behind images and what makes them powerful elements
of communication. Students will be introduced to the works from Giotto, Piero
della Francesca, Pontormo, Caravaggio, and some modern visual communication
works including films by Pier Paolo Pasolini.
