Parents - Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Abroadco?
Abroadco is a small study abroad provider dedicated to offering high quality affordable study abroad programs to North American students. All Abroadco staff members studied abroad themselves and have extensive experience working in the study abroad field.
What if my student has a problem abroad?
We have experienced onsite staff at all of our program locations. Students are given the onsite directors’ cell phone and other contact information. If there is a problem, students must contact the onsite director. The onsite director will resolve the problem directly with the student, working with the U.S. office as well.
How do I contact my student abroad?
All Abroadco students are provided with international mobile phones during their program. International mobile phones have free incoming calls so you can call them on their cell phone. Additionally, all students will have access to email throughout their sojourn abroad. If you have difficulty contacting your student, let us know and we can help.
Will my student be safe?
We are committed to keeping all Abroadco program participants safe. To that end, our onsite staff stays current on local conditions and keeps in contact with the U.S. embassies and other program providers in the same city. Students receive a separate pre-departure Health and Safety Handbook as well that contains much useful information on how to stay safe. With all the preparations and advice Abroadco provides to students, students are also responsible for making wise decisions and staying out of dangerous situations.
How are transcripts for study abroad processed?
At the completion of the program, final transcripts are issued and sent to the Abroadco office. Once Abroadco has determined all financial obligations on the part of the student have been met and the international mobile phone has been returned, Abroadco will send the transcript to the student’s home institution or to the student’s home address, according to student wishes.
What’s included in the program fee?
All Abroadco program fees include the following:
- Tuition and fees
- Housing for duration of program
- Extensive pre-departure information
- Meals (depending on location and housing choice)
- Laundry (depending on location and housing choice)
- Airport reception and transfer to housing
- Thorough onsite orientation
- International mobile phone with free incoming calls
- Cultural and social events
- Experienced onsite Abroadco staff
- Travel backpack and guidebook
- Excursions and associated costs
- Post-program evaluation
- Transcript from accredited university (with exception of International College of Cannes, which provides a language school transcript)
What if my student’s financial aid loans are disbursed after they leave?
Financial aid is often disbursed after a student leaves for their program. Because of this, Abroadco has instituted policies that allow students to defer the financial aid portion of their program fee until that money has been disbursed. Abroadco works with the student’s financial aid office to determine that date and will follow up with students and/or their families to collect final payment. Students need to make arrangements to have their final balance paid in a timely manner. Abroadco works with students and their families to make sure this is done.
What if financial aid does not cover the entire cost of the program?
Financial aid rarely covers the entire program fee. Once the student’s financial aid office has provided Abroadco with the amount of financial aid the student will receive, Abroadco will bill the student and/or their family for the remaining balance. That balance is due prior to the student departing for their program.
Can I visit my student during the program?
Definitely! We encourage parents to visit their students during their time abroad. Attendance is mandatory at all our programs, so it’s a good idea to plan your visit around weekends or a holiday.
Where will my student live?
Depending on where your student chooses to study, it could be an apartment, homestay, or student residence. All Abroadco housing has been carefully selected and inspected.
What is the best way for my student to access funds while abroad?
The best way to access money abroad is through an ATM. ATMs are widely available throughout Europe. By using an ATM, you can deposit money in your student’s bank account and it will be instantly available to your student. Talk with your bank regarding any additional fees (and possible fee waivers) for using ATMs abroad.
