Traces the European Enlightenment, the attempt to reconsider humanity's understanding of itself, through a literary-philosophical interpretation of Diderot, Rousseau, Kant, Defoe, Swift, Voltaire, and Sade. Analyzes these writers' attempts to reforge the relationship between narrative form and ethical exemplarity, given the breakdown of traditional forms of narration and ethics.
