Full Description

This course examines chronologically and topically some of the main features of the historical development of Christianity in Europe from its origins up to the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The material to be covered in the semester will include: the origins, organization, and spread of the first Christian communities throughout Europe; Christian persecutions and martyrs; varieties of Christianity, heresies, and the development of orthodoxy; the rise and diffusion of the monastic movement and spirituality; and major ecclesiastical councils and their controversies. This encounter with Christianity from Antiquity to the 16th century will help students understand the ways in which European societies have received, expressed and defined Christianity, and how religious values have helped shape European identities.
