Covers the literature of the First and Second Empires, including such topics as romanticism, naturalism, and symbolism. Includes writers such as Balzac, Hugo, and Stendhal. Also analyzes 20th century styles such as Nouveau Roman and the Theater of the Absurd, and writers including Baudelaire, Flaubert, and Valéry.
