This MA-level course introduces students to the philosophical origins, history, and emergence of the concept of civil society, and provides an overview of current transnational society as a contested arena in a rapidly globalized world. Topics will include: the history of civil society; the changing nature of sovereignty; the multicultural debates; emerging transnational actors, issues, and civil society organizations; and critiques of transnational civil society.

This MA-level course introduces students to the philosophical origins, history, and emergence of the concept of civil society, and provides an overview of current transnational society as a contested arena in a rapidly globalized world.
